A Book Review From A Non-Reader

Monday, April 10, 2017

Yes, you read that title correctly!
I don't typically read books.
Heck, these days I don't even read magazines anymore!
And reading blog posts...oh, how I wish I could read them more then I do :(
Enough crying about never getting to read things.

I DID actually read a book!
A couple of weeks ago I was contacted by Riverdale Avenue Books to come to an event in Cleveland at Sarita Restaurant.
It was to celebrate the launch of Esme Oliver's new book Smoke Drink F*#k.
I was so bummed that I wasn't able to go, but they did offer me a copy of the book to review :)

When I read that it was the anti Eat, Pray, Love I was intrigued.
(I wasn't a fan of the movie)
Books are a lot like movies for me.
If they don't pull me in pretty quick, I am done and move onto the next thing :/

**Remember I am not a writer or a reader for that matter, so I may not write this review like you are used to reading.**

In an nutshell, Esme writes about what most women (and men) have gone through in some way, shape, or form.
Turning a monumental age (is her case 40), dealing with a bad break up, and not loving her job, she runs off to Italy to escape it all.
There she meets a man named Fernando and follows through on her quest to smoke, drink, and f*#k her way through her trip.
Honestly, that is what she has planned.
And I guess this is where I lost interest.
Maybe I am too literal about things.
But I have no interest to do something like that.
Nor do I find others who do it interesting.
Falling in love in a short time, long distance relationships, etc. are just not for me.

I kept reading for the sake of this review, but I just couldn't get into it.
And that is OK.
Everyone else who reviews it may love it!

Again, I am not into reading books.
Also, I am kind of old school - meaning at some points things were more graphic than I would prefer.

Maybe its me, but I felt like it was another story about a women who was in a bad relationship, experienced a bad break up, doesn't like her job, is depressed, etc. etc.
In the end she gets past the idea of turning 40, quits her job, and begins to find peace with herself and her life.
But I feel like I have heard that story a million times.
Heck, I know I have been through similar things myself.

But maybe this is your cup of tea.
Have you read this book?
What did you think of it?
Do I just not read enough books?
Am I way too judgmental?

So there is my review.
Do I expect Esme to call me and want to be BFF's?
Absolutely not!
But I wanted to keep things real and honest, because that is who I am :)
